Under Boileau’s direction, VCBIS has adapted to the changing needs of Ontario’s healthcare system. The COVID-19 pandemic, for example, forced the organization to rethink its service delivery models. When home visits became impractical, VCBIS quickly transitioned to virtual services, ensuring continued client support.
VCBIS has also pioneered innovative programs like the transition program, which bridges the gap between hospital and community care. This model of care involves close collaboration between hospital counsellors and community health agencies, fostering smooth transitions for clients and ensuring non-stop comprehensive care. As a bonus, the program has significantly reduced the strain on healthcare resources.
Empowering Through Awareness and Innovation
Beyond providing direct care, VCBIS is committed to raising awareness about brain injuries. Their annual Brain Injury Awareness Day, held each June, brings together community members, clients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals for education, expert speakers, and policy discussions. “We are looking for different sources of funding either from government sources or the private sector, as a brain injury can occur to anyone, and the effects on the individual, their caregivers, family, and friends are life-altering,” explained Boileau.
Additionally, VCBIS is committed to advancing research in ABI care and collaborating with local universities to improve client outcomes and pave the way for future innovations. Vista Centre Brain Injury Services (VCBIS) is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors whose role is to plan and determine policy and be accountable to the community it serves, so that the stated purpose, goals and objectives of the organization can be attained.
