As a 6th generation family-owned and operated Canadian company, Burnbrae Farms is celebrating 130 years of farming in Canada. What sets Burnbrae Farms apart? The Hudson family has always focused on sustainability. Working to make a difference is in their culture–both as a business and as a family. And in this context, “family” proudly reflects both members of the Hudson family and members of the Burnbrae Farms team.
In this spirit, Burnbrae Farms introduced its new solar field in Lyn, Ontario, this past summer. Located on the original home farm purchased by Joseph Hudson in 1891, this solar field will generate 500 kilowatts of energy, enough to power 85 houses!
The farm and the grading station will use the power produced, and any additional power will go back to the electricity grid. This solar field faces southwest, the goal is to effectively target peak and daily energy demands in the afternoon.
This is Burnbrae Farms’ second solar farm. Their Ralos facility, located near Woodstock, Ontario, is their first and is the largest solar-powered egg-laying farm in Canada. Eggs from this farm are sold under their Green Valley Farms brand, a division of Burnbrae Farms. “The Ralos farm was such a milestone for us as our first solar-powered egg farm and we learned so much from the process that we were able to build upon this learning when installing the solar field in Lyn. We will continue to innovate our operations for future sustainability projects,” comments Margaret Hudson, President & CEO of Burnbrae Farms.
Producing more power than it uses, the Ralos farm shares its excess power with an adjoining farm. Now with two solar-powered projects, the Burnbrae team’s mission to reduce greenhouse emissions and commitment to increase the use of sustainable green energy is in full force like never before.
Sustainable farming has always been part of the Hudson family and Burnbrae Farms values, and we are committed to building towards a greener tomorrow.
