Did you know that people with a strong social network live an average of 22 percent longer than those without one. It might sound surprising, but it’s true! But why is being socially connected so important?
Well, for starters, having good friends can act like a shield against feeling down, especially as you grow older. And when you’re happier, you’re more likely to take better care of yourself.
Plus, having people you can lean on when things get tough can give you both a boost of moral support and practical help, making tough times feel a bit lighter.
Studies have found that seniors who don’t have many social interactions tend to see their physical abilities decline faster. Staying connected with others actually keeps you more active.
“The key to feeling good and staying well is to have a mix of different types of friends. You’ve got your acquaintances, those friends you casually hang out with, and then your close buddies.” – emphasizes Whitney Hillts, the Regional LivingWell Manager at Delmanor Communities.
You can find new friends by taking a class, volunteering, joining clubs, or going to talks and events. The more friends you make and the more open you are to new experiences, the better your existing relationships get. Plus, being social and trying new things also help your brain stay sharp and give you more energy.
“Remember, having fun chats and trying out new things, especially things that get you moving, are really helpful in feeling better if you’re ever feeling down. And don’t forget to laugh – it’s like a superpower for feeling good!”- adds Whitney.
