Not an Imagined Place. It’s Allamakee County!

In Allamakee County, Iowa, every moment is an opportunity for adventure and discovery. A haven for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone seeking serenity away from the hustle and bustle of city life, this charming corner of Iowa is full of experiences waiting to be discovered. From outdoor adventures to family-friendly events and locally grown meals, Allamakee County is not to be missed.

Natural Wonders

From its rugged bluffs to its winding rivers, Allamakee County boasts a landscape unlike any other in Iowa. Thanks to its location within the Driftless Area, it’s also home to one of nature’s greatest mysteries.

The Driftless Area is a region devoid of glacial drift, which are deposits of silt, gravel and rock that glaciers would have left behind. What makes it such a mystery is that these areas are surrounded by drift—this means that glaciers once surrounded the Driftless Area but did not pass through it. As a result, this area is home to a rugged terrain that feels untouched, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts to get a good look at the abundant diversity of plants and animals that call it home.

If natural mysteries pique your interest, the Driftless Area Education & Visitor Center should be at the top of your list. A gateway to understanding the unique geology and ecology of the area, the Center hosts interpretive exhibits that delve into the cultural, recreational, and natural significance of the Driftless Region.

Outdoor Adventures

The wonders of nature await at every turn in Allamakee County, with several preserved areas, parks, and historical sites to explore.

One of Allamakee County’s crown jewels is the Effigy Mounds National Monument, Iowa’s only national park. With over 200 prehistoric American Indian mounds, including striking effigies shaped like bears and birds, this monument offers visitors a glimpse into the region’s rich history. Hiking trails wind through the park, providing opportunities to explore these ancient relics while taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Can’t get enough of outdoor adventures? The Yellow River State Forest is calling your name, with nearly 9,000 acres of rugged terrain waiting to be discovered. Known as the “Little Switzerland” of Iowa, this forest offers hiking, biking, horseback riding, and even winter sports like snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. With campgrounds nestled among the trees, it’s the perfect place to reconnect with nature and unwind beneath the stars.

Scenic Drives

The beauty of Allamakee County extends beyond its natural wonders to its charming communities and scenic byways. The Driftless Area Scenic Byway, voted the most scenic byway in Iowa, meanders through the county, offering travelers 100 miles of breathtaking vistas and historic landmarks. From the quaint towns of Harpers Ferry and Lansing to the picturesque landscapes of New Albin and Postville, each stop along the way is another reason to fall in love with Allamakee County’s rich heritage and vibrant culture.

Whether seeking a weekend getaway or a week-long escape, Allamakee County has something for everyone. From hiking to biking, fishing to shopping, and, of course, solving ancient mysteries, this hidden gem is full of activities that will have you and your family coming back for more.
