For millions of children around the world, hunger is not an abstract issue. It is the reason they cannot concentrate in class, the reason they may miss school entirely, and the reason their future can begin to narrow before they have had a chance to dream.
Mary’s Meals was built around a simple but powerful belief: every child deserves enough to eat and the chance to learn. The global charity provides one daily meal in a place of education, helping children in some of the world’s poorest communities come to school, stay in school, and focus on the lessons in front of them.
Today, Mary’s Meals reaches more than three million children every school day in over 6,400 schools across 16 countries, including Benin, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Kenya, Lebanon, Liberia, Malawi, South Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and more. Its work is rooted in the understanding that food and education are deeply connected. When a meal is served at school, it does more than ease hunger for a day. It gives children a reason to enter the classroom and an opportunity to build a different future.
Meeting Hunger With Practical Hope
The 2026 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and partner agencies, underscores the urgency of this work. While progress is being made in the fight against hunger, healthy diets remain unaffordable for about 2.7 billion people worldwide, and 645 million people faced hunger in 2025.
In that context, Mary’s Meals offers a practical and proven response. The organization’s global average cost to feed one child for an entire school year is just $31.70, or about 16 cents per meal. That low-cost model is made possible through local partnership, careful stewardship, and community leadership.
Wherever possible, meals are prepared using locally procured food, supporting farmers and strengthening local economies. Across the countries where Mary’s Meals works, tens of thousands of volunteers from local communities prepare and serve meals to children. This approach helps ensure that the program is not simply delivered to a community, but owned by it.
A Movement Built on Small Acts of Love
The story of Mary’s Meals began with founder and CEO Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, whose early humanitarian work grew from a single jeepload of aid delivered from Scotland to Bosnia-Herzegovina during the Balkan conflict. What began as a response to immediate need has become a global movement, still anchored in the same conviction: when hungry children are in front of us today, they must be fed today, while the long-term solution is built alongside them.
That vision is shared by supporters around the world, including Canadians who choose to give, volunteer, fundraise, or build awareness in their own communities. Mary’s Meals Canada invites people to be part of a movement that believes those who have more than they need can share with those who lack even the most basic things.

In every province, where families, schools, faith groups, businesses, and community organizations often look for meaningful ways to make a global impact, Mary’s Meals offers a clear and accessible path. A fundraiser, monthly gift, school initiative, corporate partnership, or simple one-time donation can help provide life-changing meals to children who may otherwise be too hungry to learn.
Food Changes the Story
Mary’s Meals is guided by a vision that every child receives one daily meal in their place of education. It is a vision built not on complexity, but on compassion, efficiency, and the belief that small acts of generosity can add up to extraordinary change.
