Programs like “Jobs of the Future” introduce students to emerging industries and technologies, while career-focused clubs—ranging from business to medicine—offer hands-on experience and mentorship.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION THAT INSPIRES GROWTH

Learning at SMUS extends far beyond the classroom. With Vancouver Island’s natural beauty as a second classroom, SMUS leverages its surroundings for transformative outdoor education. From ocean kayaking and mountain skiing to multi-day expeditions, students are immersed in Vancouver Island’s environment while learning science, social studies and leadership. The Grade 10 “Ridgelines and Coastlines” program and Grade 12 Outdoor Leadership program are examples of how the school integrates outdoor adventure with academics, including Indigenous studies and environmental stewardship.

“These experiences help students grow personally and socially, away from screens and into real, meaningful connections,” said Reagan Daly, Head of Experiential Education.

“The opportunity to go to a boarding school that has access to mountains, oceans, city life and a community within its own campus is unique to SMUS and one that is treasured by most who go here.”

AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Leadership development is another pillar of the SMUS experience. Student councils—spanning athletics, arts, well-being, sustainability, service, and more—give students authentic opportunities to lead. “It’s a microcosm of what leadership looks like in the real world,” said Richard Primrose, Senior School Assistant Director, Student Life and Leadership. “They’re getting a truly authentic snapshot of the leadership experience. These are all the human skills that AI is not going to be able to replace.”
