A Sustainable Sip of Niagara’s Wine Country

There are few better times to explore Ontario wine country than autumn. As the vineyards shift from green to gold and harvest season gets underway, Niagara-on-the-Lake offers plenty of reasons for a fall getaway—from scenic country roads and vineyard views to the opportunity to discover the people and places behind some of Ontario’s best-known wines.

This year, visitors have another reason to raise a glass. Stratus Vineyards has become Ontario’s first B Corp Certified winery, adding a new distinction to a Niagara destination that has spent more than two decades putting sustainability at the heart of the wine experience.

The designation makes Stratus one of only three B Corp Certified wineries in Canada and places it among a relatively small group worldwide to have achieved the globally recognized standard.
For travellers increasingly interested in not just where they go, but the impact they have while getting there, it’s a fitting milestone.

Where Wine and Sustainability Meet

Located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Stratus is home to 55 acres of sustainably farmed vineyards and 16 grape varieties. From its first-ever bottle, Stratus has worked to bring together innovation, sustainability, hospitality, and winemaking, with an emphasis on creating wines that reflect the distinctive character of Niagara. You can taste their relationship to the land in every story and in every sip.

When Stratus opened its doors in 2005, it became the world’s first fully LEED-certified winery, putting environmentally conscious design at the centre of its operations. Four years later, it became a founding member of Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario and has continued to pursue practices to reduce its environmental footprint. Its latest achievement takes an even wider view of what it means to operate sustainably.

Certified B Corporations are evaluated by B Lab, the nonprofit organization behind the global B Corp movement. Rather than examining just one component of a company, the certification considers its overall impact across governance, workers, community, environment, and customers. Stratus earned a B Impact Assessment score of 85.1, surpassing the benchmark required for certification.

“B Corp certification recognizes the culmination of our work since day one and holds us to a fulsome standard of ethical and purpose-driven business practice,” said Suzanne Janke, General Manager of Stratus Vineyards. “This accomplishment belongs to our entire team, whose commitment and passion allows us to pursue excellence in the glass while being equally ambitious about our impact on our land, our people, and our community.”

From the Vineyard to the Bottle

For wine lovers, sustainability can sometimes feel like something happening behind the scenes. At Stratus, it touches nearly every part of the journey from vineyard to glass.
Among the initiatives contributing to its certification are the use of lightweight, reusable glass bottles to reduce emissions, a long-term local supply chain, partnerships with arts, cultural, and environmental nonprofits, and a diverse and established workforce.

“And now, under B Corp, we view our work with an even broader lens,” Janke said. “It challenges us to consider not only how we make wine, but how every aspect of the business can create a positive outcome.”

That philosophy feels particularly at home in Niagara, where wine tourism is deeply connected to place. A visit to a winery offers more than the chance to discover a new favourite vintage; it can provide a closer look at how the landscape, climate, farming practices, and people behind each bottle shape what eventually reaches the glass.

And autumn offers an especially fitting backdrop. With harvest underway and Niagara’s vineyards transformed by fall colour, it’s a chance to experience wine country during one of its most atmospheric seasons.

Twenty-one years after Stratus first helped advance sustainable winery design, its latest milestone offers visitors another reason to look a little more closely at what’s behind the bottle. In Niagara’s wine country, a great glass of wine can tell you plenty about where it came from, and, increasingly, where the most mindful in the industry plan to go next.
