Summer vacation is around the corner, and your early warm-weather plans may include fueling up the car and heading out on a road trip. Texas has no shortage of incredible sights and roadside stops to enjoy. Use these tried-and-true road trip tips next time you head out.
Get Prepared
Spending hours in a car can be a lot of fun—depending on your preparations.
Texas weather can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year, so it’s essential to make sure your car is ready to face any weather conditions. With properly inflated tires in good condition, a maintenance check, a fully charged car battery, or enough gas in the tank, you’ll be able to easily get where you’re going. Be sure to plan your route ahead of time and avoid driving between midnight and 6 a.m.—the last thing you want is to be road-weary and unable to find somewhere to stay the night!
Texas can get hot, especially during the summer months. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors or in the car, and stay prepared by always having an emergency roadside kit at your disposal.
Important items to include in the kit are jumper cables, a flashlight, blankets, matches and candles, bottled water, dry food, and a first aid kit. It may seem like too many items, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. It’s also an excellent opportunity to stock up on snacks—your road trip buddies will thank you!
Find Your Stops
Planning out the stops you’ll be making in between, including charging or fuel stops, is a great way to find hidden gems on your route! At the same time, don’t be afraid to deviate from it if something interesting catches your eye along the way. Some of the best experiences on a road trip happen spontaneously.
Texas is home to many charming small towns, each with its own unique character and attractions. Take the time to explore some of these towns along your route for an authentic Texas experience.
Be sure to sample some local cuisine along the way, whether at a roadside diner or a renowned restaurant—Texas is known for its delicious food, including BBQ, Tex-Mex, and southern comfort food.
On-The-Go Entertainment
Long road trips can get tiring, and entertainment can be the key to a relaxing ride, especially if you have kids in tow. Why not tune into an audiobook together for a great family bonding activity that will keep everyone engaged and quiet? Download a few family-friendly titles ahead of time, and consider having a variety of genres to choose from so that everyone stays engaged.
For a break from the stories, have a fun playlist downloaded full of your family’s favorite songs—whether it shows tunes or timeless classics; listening to music together can be a fun and fulfilling family bonding experience.
Keep in mind that long stretches of driving can be tiring—take regular breaks to stretch your legs, grab a snack, and rest. There are many rest areas and roadside parks along Texas highways where you can stop and relax. Even while you drive, make sure to take the time to appreciate the scenery. Texas is home to stunning natural landscapes, from deserts and mountains to forests and beaches.
