A National Nonprofit Started Right Here in Allen, TX

In North Texas, a life-changing nonprofit is quietly making waves. Heroes on the Water (HOW), based in Allen, is helping veterans, first responders, and their families find peace, connection, and healing through a surprising method—kayak fishing.

Founded in Texas in 2007, Heroes on the Water has grown into a national organization with over 55 volunteer-led chapters and nine structured therapeutic programs nationwide. Their mission is simple but powerful: help those who serve rediscover purpose and calm through recreational outdoor experiences. In Dallas-Fort Worth, the impact is powerful.

So, Why Kayak Fishing?

It’s the perfect combination. Kayaking offers low-impact physical exercise and the calming benefits of being in “blue spaces,” natural bodies of water proven to lower stress and anxiety and promote mental well-being. Fishing adds focus and a sense of accomplishment. Together, they create a deeply grounding experience that encourages participants to be fully present in the moment.

A Local and Lasting Impact

The Dallas-Fort Worth area has been key to the organization’s growth. The DFW and Brazos River Valley chapters were among the first and continue to serve local veterans and first responders with on-the-water outings that foster camaraderie and support.

“Our programs don’t just benefit individuals; they strengthen families,” explained George Chrisman, DFW chapter coordinator. “We make space for families to participate together, providing shared experiences that promote emotional healing and reconnection.”

Real Stories, Real Impact

For many, the work that HOW does has been nothing short of lifesaving.

Former Army Sergeant Andre Jackson, a regular with the DFW chapter, said the program helped him face his post-traumatic stress and reconnect with others who understand his journey. “The simple act of being on the water provided a respite from the noise in my mind,” he shared.

Lisa Ramsey, a retired Fort Worth police officer who survived a gunshot wound in the line of duty, finds peace with HOW. “It’s about being able to relax, let your mind rest, and have fun with people who get it,” she said.

Then there’s SFC Jason Austin (Ret.), who once stood on the edge of ending it all. One phone call and a kayak fishing event with HOW changed everything. “Now it’s my mission to reach out and let others know they’re not alone,” shared Jason, who helps coordinate HOW’s national volunteer program.

How to Support Heroes on the Water

Heroes on the Water relies on individual and corporate donations and volunteers. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, every outing is free for participants.

Consider donating or sponsoring an event or chapter to help keep programs free and accessible. As little as $10 a month helps fuel the mission. Or sign up to volunteer your time on the water, at events, or behind the scenes.
