Taylor Swift has been crowned Time magazine’s Person of the Year.
The Shake It Off singer beat finalists including King Charles III, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hollywood strikers and Barbie to become the magazine’s Person of the Year.
Explaining their decision, Sam Jacobs, the magazine’s Editor in Chief, said on Today on Wednesday, “Picking one person who represents the eight billion people on the planet is no easy task. We picked a choice that represents joy. Someone who’s bringing light to the world. She was like weather, she was everywhere.”
In a rare interview with Time, the music superstar shared, “This is the proudest and happiest I’ve ever felt, and the most creatively fulfilled and free I’ve ever been.”
Time awards the Person of the Year title to “the individual, group, or concept that has had the most influence on the world throughout the previous 12 months”.
Taylor, 33, has had a stellar year, with her highly popular Eras Tour reportedly propelling her to billionaire status. She also released the fastest-selling record of 2023, the re-recording of her 2014 album 1989, and was crowned Spotify’s most-streamed global artist of the year last week.
She was previously part of the 2017 Person of the Year collective, The Silence Breakers, a group of people who spoke out against sexual abuse and harassment, thanks to her trial against former radio DJ David Mueller.
The pop star follows in the footsteps of previous Time of the Year honourees including Barack Obama, Greta Thunberg, Donald Trump, and Elon Musk.
