A Road Trip Through Northwest Nebraska

Pine-covered ridges, sculpted badlands, fossil beds, and wide-open High Plains shape the road through Northwest Nebraska.

Here, the journey between Chadron, Crawford, and Harrison is as much a part of the experience as the destinations themselves. Historic sites, winding trails, public art, ancient geology, and stories stretching back generations give each stop its own character, while the surrounding landscape ties it all together. For travellers ready to see where the road leads, there’s no better direction.

Begin in the Pine Ridge

Chadron is a natural place to start.

Just outside town, Chadron State Park sits in the heart of the Nebraska National Forest, surrounded by ponderosa pines and views of the Pine Ridge escarpment. Established in 1921 as Nebraska’s first state park, its 972 acres offer hiking and biking trails, cabins, camping, fishing, picnic areas, and plenty of ways to get outside.

Back in Chadron, the landscape gives way to another side of the region: its art, architecture, and history.

The Chadron Downtown Historic District includes more than 40 sites on a self-guided walking tour, while nearby Chadron Art Alley fills downtown walls with community-created murals. The area is also part of the Open Frontier Creative District, where visual and performing arts meet the cultural history of the High Plains.

For a deeper look at the past, visit the Museum of the Fur Trade, which traces the people, goods, and cultures connected to one of North America’s earliest industries. Chadron State College is also home to the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center and the Eleanor Barbour Cook Museum of Geology.

History Written Across the Landscape

Continue west to Crawford, where Fort Robinson State Park brings together some of Northwest Nebraska’s most striking scenery and most significant history.

The former military post is associated with the Red Cloud Indian Agency, the 1879 Cheyenne Outbreak, the death of Oglala Lakota leader Crazy Horse, cavalry operations, and its later use as a prisoner-of-war camp.

Today, the 22,000-acre park surrounds its historic buildings with trails, buttes, open grasslands, and opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, and camping.

North of Crawford, the terrain changes dramatically at Toadstool Geologic Park. Narrow clay pedestals capped with sandstone create formations that gave the park its name, while fossils and prehistoric footprints reveal animals that once crossed this landscape, including ancient horses, rhinoceroses, camels, tortoises, and sabre-toothed cats.

Visitors can explore the formations on foot, follow interpretive trails through the badlands, and see a reconstructed sod house that offers a glimpse into homesteading life on the prairie.

Keep Going to Harrison

The road west leads to Harrison, a small community surrounded by some of Sioux County’s biggest landscapes.
South of town, Agate Fossil Beds National Monument preserves evidence of animals that lived here roughly 19 million years ago. Its grasslands, trails, and fossil exhibits tell one part of the story, while the James H. Cook Collection reveals another. The collection includes Lakota items given to rancher James Cook and his family through their friendships with Chief Red Cloud and other Oglala Lakota people.

The result is a place where natural history and human history sit side by side, each adding context to the land outside the visitor centre.
